When is root canal treatment needed?
A root canal is needed when the soft tissue (pulp) inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed — usually because of deep decay, a crack, or a large old filling. Treating it saves the natural tooth instead of extracting it.
Common signs include pain that lingers after hot or cold food, pain on biting, swelling of the gum near a tooth, a pimple-like boil on the gum, or a tooth that has darkened. Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and are found on an X-ray, so a check-up is the only way to know.
What happens during a root canal?
- 1Examination and X-ray to confirm the diagnosis
- 2Local anaesthesia so the area is numb
- 3The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped
- 4The canals are sealed and the tooth is filled
- 5A crown is usually recommended afterwards, especially for back teeth, to protect the tooth from breaking

Root Canal Treatment: questions patients ask
Does it hurt?
No. Modern anaesthesia and rotary tools make RCT comparable to a routine filling.
How many visits?
Most molars are completed in 1 visit (60–90 min). Complex cases may need 2.
How much does root canal treatment cost in Madurai?
At Astra Dental Care, root canal treatment is ₹3,200 for a front tooth and ₹3,500 for a back tooth (molar), including X-rays and consultation. A crown, if needed, is separate — ceramic from ₹3,000 or zirconia from ₹5,000.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually need a crown because they take heavy biting forces and become more brittle after treatment. For front teeth it depends on how much tooth structure is left — your dentist will advise.
